What do you notice about the experiences and path(s) taken by the interviewee(s) that result in their elevation to decision-making roles and educational technology experts?
Interviewee Rick Hassler's journey from a history teacher to an educational technology leader is truly inspiring. His diverse experiences highlight the importance of adaptability and continuous learning in the field of education. Rick Hassler shared his experiences and vision on witnessing instructional changes. Hassler noted that “changing teacher approaches and adjusting to a new way of approaching their role as a facilitator of learning, instead of a deliverer of content can be incredibly challenging.” (bstachowiak & McClay, 2021)
Combining his teaching background with private sector skills, Hassler was well-positioned to lead technology integration in educational settings. His role likely involved overseeing the implementation of technology initiatives, training educators, and ensuring that technology enhanced learning outcomes.
What connections if any are made by the interviewee to the ISTE Standards or Essential Condition s to support technology use and decision-making?
In an interview with Rick Hassler, he mentioned that having the Triple E model, SAMR (Substitution, Augmentation, Modification, and Redefinition), and the ISTE (International Society for Technology in Education) Standards, all really help support teachers in changing their methodology as well as equipping leadership teams to alter their mindsets.
Hassler talked about actually having to develop a curriculum, a whole curriculum, to support leaders in changing their own mindsets and on how to support their teachers throughout the process. It is essential that leaders understand the Triple E model, SAMR, ISTE, and project-based learning (bstachowiak & McClay, 2021). Understanding these frameworks and models can greatly enhance the effectiveness of educational leadership.
Technology in education standards emphasize the importance of using technology to support learner-centered strategies. By adhering to these ISTE standards, educators can effectively integrate technology to create engaging, inclusive, and personalized learning experiences that address the diverse needs of their students (Rule, 2006).
What is the role of professional development within the initiatives or strategies implemented?
Rick Hassler's insights into the failure of the LAUSD one-to-one iPad project highlight a crucial aspect of technology integration: adequate teacher training and support. The ipad became a weakness for intended use that led to issues of data privacy when students began inputting their personalized apple IDs into the devices. According to Rashid and Asghar (2016) they mentioned that “ Not all modes of digital engagement are suited to education.” (Rashid & Asghar, 2016) Some may be more distracting or less conducive to learning.
Without proper training, teachers may struggle to effectively incorporate technology into their teaching practices, leading to suboptimal outcomes. As far as technology in education goes, it is important for educators to be confident that they have the support they need. “Creating a technology plan and policies is only the first step toward embarking upon a successful technology initiative.” (IES, 2025) A needs assessment is indeed a crucial step in effectively integrating technology in educational settings.
By identifying who the potential technology users are and understanding their specific needs, educators and leaders can tailor professional development programs to be more impactful (IES, 2025). Ongoing professional development is crucial for helping educators and staff become proficient with new technologies.
What real-world challenges do they share as they describe the work they are engaged in (or have completed) and how do they address these challenges?
Educators and leaders often face several real-world challenges, which they address with innovative approaches and thoughtful strategies. With the rapid advancement of technology, educators and leaders must continuously update their skills and integrate new tools into their practices.
Rick Hassler's approach using the ADKAR change model is a comprehensive way to address the challenges of technology integration. By combining the ADKAR model with project-based learning, ISTE frameworks, and leadership modeling, Hassler creates a holistic approach that not only provides access to technology but also ensures its meaningful use in the classroom (bstachowiak & McClay, 2021).
What critique might you offer? Do you see any concerns? Are you inspired? Tell me about your perspective informed by research from this week.
From my perspective, I find the resilience and creativity of educators and leaders truly inspiring. Their ability to adapt to challenges and implement innovative strategies is crucial for the future of education. One concern is ensuring equitable access to professional development opportunities.
Not all educators have the same access to resources, which can create disparities. The integration of technology in education opens up exciting possibilities. The potential of technology in education is vast, and its thoughtful integration can lead to more effective, engaging, and inclusive learning experiences.
By engaging leadership at every level, schools can create a more inclusive and collaborative environment that supports the successful integration of technology. This approach not only enhances the effectiveness of technology initiatives but also fosters a culture of continuous improvement and innovation.

Bradley,
ReplyDeleteGreat post! I like how you discussed Rick Hassler's journey from a history teacher to an educational technology leader. The way you talked about using things like ISTE to help teachers change how they teach and for leaders to switch up their thinking was really helpful too. It made me think about how tech can really change things in education and why it's so important to make sure everyone has a fair shot at using it and getting the support they need.
